GFS Tank — Glass-Fused-to-Steel Bolted Storage Tanks

A practical guide to glass-fused-to-steel storage tanks for plants, waterworks and biogas projects in Thailand — how the material works, where it beats the alternatives, and what to put in your enquiry.

What a GFS tank actually is

GFS stands for glass-fused-to-steel. Steel sheets are coated with glass frit and fired in a furnace until the glass melts and bonds into the steel surface. The result is not paint sitting on top of metal — it is a single composite material that keeps the structural strength of steel and the chemical resistance of glass.

Because the firing has to happen in a factory furnace, GFS tanks arrive as finished panels and are bolted together on site. That is why you will almost always see the terms GFS tank and bolted steel tank used together.

Why the coating method matters more than the steel

Every steel tank rusts if water reaches bare metal. What separates a tank that lasts decades from one that fails early is how the barrier between water and steel is made and how well it survives.

  • Glass-fused-to-steel — inorganic. It does not degrade under UV, does not chalk, and cannot peel the way a coating film can. The surface is smooth, so scale and biofilm have less to hold onto and cleaning is easier.
  • Epoxy (including fusion-bonded epoxy) — organic. It can be applied in the factory or on site, which makes local repair straightforward, but it ages with heat, UV and time and needs an inspection and recoating plan.
  • Galvanising — lowest cost, and the zinc layer is sacrificial by design. Suitable for clean water and shorter service expectations, not for aggressive water.

The trade-off is honest in both directions: glass is hard but brittle, so panels must be protected from impact during shipping and erection, and site repair is not comparable to touching up a painted surface.

Bolted assembly versus welding on site

Bolted construction is not just an installation preference — it changes what is possible.

  • Coating quality is controlled in the factory, not by site conditions or welder skill. Thickness and firing are uniform across every panel.
  • No hot work and no heavy power supply on site, which matters on remote waterworks and agricultural sites where access is limited.
  • Predictable schedule. Erection time does not depend on weather windows for coating to cure.
  • Repairable and expandable. A damaged panel can be replaced. Height can often be added later instead of buying a new tank.

The counterpart is that joints are mechanical, so bolt torque and sealant workmanship decide whether the tank stays tight. A poorly erected bolted tank leaks at the seams for the same reason a poorly welded tank leaks at the weld.

Where GFS tanks are used

  • Potable and raw water storage for plants, estates and municipal waterworks
  • Fire water reserve tanks that must hold a required volume at all times
  • Wastewater treatment, equalisation and sludge holding
  • Anaerobic digesters and biogas storage, where gas tightness and chemical resistance matter
  • Agricultural and livestock water storage exposed to sun and weather year round

What to specify before requesting a quotation

Quotations only become comparable when everyone is pricing the same thing. Send these six items and the numbers you get back will line up:

  1. Stored liquid and its character — potable, raw, effluent or digestate, with an approximate pH and any chemicals present. This alone rules coating grades in or out.
  2. Working volume and preferred proportions — a tall narrow tank and a short wide tank of the same capacity behave very differently on a constrained site.
  3. Site access — road width, crane availability and whether power is available. This is where bolted construction usually wins.
  4. Foundation responsibility — a full tank weighs one tonne per cubic metre. Confirm who designs and builds the base, because it is a real budget line.
  5. Standards the project must satisfy — state them in the enquiry rather than assuming, especially for potable water and fire reserve duties.
  6. Connections and access — inlet, outlet, overflow, drain, manway and ladder, plus any level instrumentation.

Common mistakes we see

  • Comparing price without comparing steel. Plate thickness and grade vary between offers while the tanks look identical from outside.
  • Leaving the foundation out of the budget. It is not optional and it is not cheap.
  • Choosing the coating for clean water and then storing effluent. This is the most common reason tanks fail earlier than expected.
  • No practical way to clean the tank. A tank that is difficult to enter and drain will simply not be cleaned.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a GFS tank last?

Service life is governed by the match between coating grade and stored liquid, and by whether the tank is cleaned on a sensible cycle — not by the steel itself. Ask the supplier to state the warranted service life in writing together with its conditions.

Is a GFS tank better than an epoxy tank?

Neither is universally better. Glass is inorganic and holds up without recoating, which suits long service life and aggressive liquids. Epoxy can be repaired on site and handles complex geometry, which suits projects where local maintenance capability matters more than maximum coating life.

Do bolted tanks leak more than welded tanks?

Not inherently. Joints sealed to specification with correct bolt torque stay tight. Weld seams made by an inexperienced welder leak just as readily. The deciding factor is installation quality, not joint type.

Can a GFS tank be extended later?

In many cases yes — additional rings can be added to increase height, subject to the original structural design and foundation capacity. Raise this at design stage if expansion is likely, because it is far cheaper to allow for it than to retrofit.

What happens if a panel is chipped?

Damage to the glass layer exposes steel and must be addressed rather than ignored. Panels are handled and erected under procedures intended to prevent impact damage, and an individual damaged panel can be replaced rather than condemning the whole tank.
